A lesson from Ladun
Prepare for the days that things do not go as planned, it will save you.
It was 200 level 2nd Semester, the course was Law of Contract and the topic was "Illegality".
It would be the first time I would come face to face with the possibility of failure in an exam hall.
I would say that learning how to deal with poor exams is a life skill for every student.
Personally, I avoid tears. It's just so draining and it does not in any way, help my grades.
I wasn't the only one that day. The majority of my class did not know that the answer to the 20 marks question was "Illegality" and it was a compulsory question. Reactions varied - confused, sad, discouraged, afraid.
As for me, when I was hit with the reality of the situation, I sighed, slung my arm around my best girl(Zeena Mustafa) and we strolled to the hall for chilled Lucozade Boost, I believe we even bought some shawarma on the way and we settled in to watch a movie.
Exams weren't over but we knew after the blow we had been dealt that day, we needed a pick-me-up. And boyyyyy, did we pick up. Amidst much laughter and a little sadness, with food and drink, we came back to ourselves.
It taught me about dealing with discouragement and failure very early on. It was a lesson I needed for my student journey.
University comes riddled with discouraging situations, which will make your heart shudder in fear but they will not define you.
Discouragement is inevitable but it cannot destroy you unless you let it, personally, I like to learn the lesson, acknowledge my feelings but not drown in them, and EAT (food is really important in the mix).
How do you handle discouraging situations???
Best,
Ladun
